Aromatherapy is a branch of phytotherapy that use the essential oil from flowers and plants to influence our psycological and physical well-being. But probably not everyone knows that there are some recipes that allow us to try the benefit of aromatherapy at home. Let's see how to create do-it-yourself products using pharmaceutical containers for the storage.
First of all, we have to say that aromatherapy is a practice not formally recognized by the scientific world. Anyway there are many research that show its effectiveness to improve our physical and mental well-being. The therapeutic benefit of medicinal plants have been discovered long time ago, but only since Middle Ages flowers, fruits and plants have been used to extract essential oils.
The technique used to extract essential oils is the distillation, invented by Arabs and enhanced during the Middle Ages. Using the dinstillation one of the first essential oils created was the rose essential oil, from which rose water - widely used for fragrances and cosmetics - is still today obtained.
Only in the Twenties the aromatherapy became known worldwide, thanks to René Maurice Gattefossé, a french chemist. He began to study the medicinal properties of essences like lavender essential oil. Gattefossé gave new impetus to aromatherapy as we know it and, thanks to his studies, essential oils began to be used in the production of cosmetics. But was the medical surgeon Jean Valnet the one who gave pseudo-scientific status to this method with the book "Aromathérapie", systematically defining the healing powers of essential oils.
Thanks to these studies, the therapeutic benefit of many different plants were recognized and the distillation has become a common practice both in the production of fragrances and cosmetics.
What are the essential oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated volatile substances that are obtained from different parts of the plant such as petals of flowers, leaves or roots, by:
- vapour distillation, a method of separating the essential oil from the water present in the plants
- dry distillation, without the use of a solvent
- cold pressing, suitable for plants that are more sensitive to heat and would not tolerate hot distillation (such as citrus fruit).
Once extracted, there are different use of essential oils; they can be topically applied with massages, used in home fragrance diffusers or taken through direct inhalation.

Advantages and disadvantages of aromatherapy
Research shown that aromatherapy has some effects also on the immune and endocrine systems, besides affects our mood and emotions.
According to various studies, aromatherapy does not only affect mood and emotions, but also the immune and endocrine systems. The therapeutic properties of essential oils range from invigorating or relaxing to anti-inflammatory effect but can also be used for their antiseptic or cicatrizating properties. You can use essential oils also to improve blood circulation and reduce articular pains.
Since the essential oils are concentrated, it is always better to ask to your physician or aromatherapist before take them, also in order to be sure you are not allergic.
As they are not water-soluble, they can be combined in home fragrance diffusers to perfume the water and gently spread their essence in the environment. For skin application, however, we recommended to dilute them in other base oils to reduce their concentration and avoid unpleasant irritant reactions.
