Superfood: super not just in the kitchen

Superfood: super not just in the kitchen

Jul 28, 2021

The boundary between the food and beauty worlds is no longer so clear-cut: this is confirmed by a study by the Cosmetics Cluster in collaboration with Beautystream and Mintel. The study entitled "The Next Beauty Trends: from food to technology, from skincare to holistic beauty" highlights the new link between these two worlds, strengthened by the arrival of "Superfoods".

Superfoods are defined as "foods that possess qualities that make them beneficial for your health, thanks to their nutritional properties," explains Alessandra Vasselli, cosmetologist on the AIDECO (Italian Association of Dermatology and Cosmetology) steering committee. Superfoods are then defined as Beauty Food when these foods or supplements are specifically aimed at maintaining or improving the appearance of the skin.

The underlying principle is the in & out philosophy: "if you can ingest them, you can apply them to the skin", explains Alessandra Vasselli. Thanks to the duo naturalness = safety, these foods have principles that can be taken not only systemically, in our diet, but also topically, in cosmetic formulations with their cosmetic packaging and therefore applied directly to our skin. Olive oil, hemp, papaya, and goji berries are just some of the superfoods used in cosmetics today: "Consumers associate edible ingredients with health benefits," says the research. “This means that even "foodie" cosmetics take on a positive connotation in their eyes, especially among the younger generations, i.e. Millennials and Gen Z". The use of superfoods in cosmetics is an all-round approach: on the one hand, the beneficial properties of these ingredients are exploited, while on the other hand, the environment is also taken into account by trying to reduce waste and possibly using food waste in the formulations.
