Make-up: for thousands of years the best partner in beauty

Make-up: for thousands of years the best partner in beauty

Dec 21, 2017

About in 3150 BC in Ancient Egypt we hear for the first time talking about make-up: it was used mostly by men to participate in royal ceremonies. The classic almond shape of the eyes was obtained thanks to very strong lines of Kohl, that was a dark powder applied with the use of a stick, while a blue or green eye shadow applied on the eyelids gave light and color to the look.

In 800 BC natural beauty was celebrated in Greece. The make-up was light, almost imperceptible, and the presence of the single-seater was considered a sign of beauty, so much that it was even made by gluing animal hair.

The Romans used Kohl to make eyelashes and eyebrows; the first face masks dates back to this time, it was made with flour, aromatic leaves, dry snails, donkey's milk and honey. Usually face was lightened to obtain a diaphanous skin, lips were red and a black eye shadow made with soot was applied to the eyes.

Today in India, Bindi is still a must for make-up: it is a red dot applied at the centre of the forehead, that in the Gupta era (320-550 AD) was used only by married women and indicated their marital status.

In 1500 A. D. Queen Elizabeth I was the first queen to introduce make-up within the court. At that time having a high forehead and very clear skin was considered a synonym of beauty, so make-up was very heavy and opaque. The concept of make-up in Victorian times was very different: using make-up was a prerogative of harlots and actresses, so women were looking for a clean and diaphanous skin.

We can consider the 19th century as an epoch of great transformations in terms of make-up, especially at this time the biggest cosmetic companies were born, L'Oreal is the first of these.

1900: the icons that made make-up history

At the beginning of the 1900s, a very clear skin was still a symbol of the wealthy life of the aristocrats, while a tanned skin was reminiscent of work and working life. In 1911, Anna Taylor obtained her patent for fake eyelashes, which became popular only in the 1940s.

In 1912 make-up also took on the meaning of freedom and rebellion in because lips of a vibrant red color became the identifying mark of women during the March for the Suffrage.

Swedish actress Greta Garbo is the symbol of femininity in the 1920s, a woman with a sensual and unforgettable look, who gave life to the androgynous style. In this period, eyeliner was used to mark the fold of the eye, but with the tail facing downwards, giving the eye a sloping shape.

Another style icon for the world of fashion and cosmetics is Marylin Monroe, who in the 1950s used vaseline as a base for make-up and a foundation of darker shades than his skin to shade and slender her face. From the stories of Allan Snyder, the actress's official make-up artist, we discover that Marylin usually used an eyeshadow of ivory white to cover the entire eye area up to the eyebrow archway and she used talcum powder to illuminate the area even more. After defining the contour and rounded corners of the lips to make them look more voluminous, the actress used different tones of red to get her inimitable red lipstick.

After the Second World War color exploded, especially in the 1980s when bright purple, green and blue eyeshadows accompanied very heavy lines of eyeliner and uncultivated eyebrows, and we don't forget the lips with full and vivid colors.

Autumn-Winter 2017/2018: the trends of the season

Color, geometry and experimentation, make-up trends for the autumn-winter 2017/2018 season focus on originality and art. Bright and energetic nuance replace the paleness of summer pastels, exalting intense colors such as blue, green, metallic silver and gold, red and more acidic and pop nuances.

Although the trend of nude makeup still persists, the use of full-color eyeshadows is increasingly in popularity: a combination of colors and drawings stretched out like true artistic brushstrokes on the face. Even the trend of contouring seems to be giving way to a clean and illuminated base glow effect. The color is accompanied by the eyeliner line, also played on the theme of anti conventionality with geometric shapes, irregular and evident thicknesses.

For lips make-up, the opaque colors are abandoned in order to glossy lips mainly based on dark shades such as grape, burgundy and plum.
